What a thrill...
I missed the first half of the PlayStation Showcase livestream from the other day, including the much rumored reveal of the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake. People must've gone wild to see the return of Snake - Naked Snake that is, in a retelling of the first chronological game in the Metal Gear franchise. Called Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater, the beautiful cinematic reveal trailer shows the food chain of a Russian jungle in action, and ends with the best goddamn theme song in video game history.
Konami claims MGS3Δ: SE will be a faithful adaptation of the original. And it should be; after MGS2's surprise Raiden put off a lot of gamers, Kojima was able to win them back with his most cinematic game to date. But how faithful can it be if the visionary behind it isn't involved? Kojima and Konami famously parted ways on sour terms after the MGSV debacle, leading to him setting up shop on his own so he could create without restrictions and make Death Stranding.
While he's currently working on Death Stranding 2, there's no sign Konami reached out to him or tried to make peace before deciding to remake one of his most beloved works, so how many of his quirky mannerisms from the original will they leave in? The experimental boss fights, EVA's blatant fanservice, the weird homoerotic stuff between Volgin and Raikov, even Raikov's whole existence since people actually like Raiden now, the fucking goddamn ladder sequence??? At the very least, Konami have confirmed that the original voice cast is returning, and even if you can't hear his gravelly tones in the trailer just knowing David Hayter is back as Snake after the other MGSV debacle is a huge win in my eyes.
Historically, every Metal Gear game Konami made without Kojima's involvement or approval has flopped, going back to Metal Gear 2: Snake's Revenge, the NES sequel to the NES port of the original MSX Metal Gear that were both only released in the west, and who can forget Survive? Konami are being assisted by Virtuos, a studio known for remasters and ports including NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition on Switch, Batman: Return to Arkham on Xbone and PS4, and the infamously buggy The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition. They better not fuck this up.
In other news, Konami also revealed the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, which features remasters of MGS, MGS2 and the original MGS3, so even if the remake does somehow turn out to be a flop at least the original will come to modern consoles soon. I had to use a PS3 to experience the franchise myself last year, and it's not easy messing with old hardware all the time.
Over to you guys, are you thrilled at the idea of MGS3 getting remade and remastered? Will it be the same without Kojima? Sound off below!
